The Maxwell surname is traditionally traced to Maccus, a Norse aristocrat who lived during the reign of David I of Scotland and is regarded as the founder of this distinguished Lowland family. By the 13th century, Sir John Maxwell was Chamberlain of Scotland and held extensive lands in Annandale. The Maxwells played a prominent role in Scottish history: Sir John’s brother Aymer and his descendants swore allegiance to Edward I of England in 1296, yet Sir Eustace Maxwell, Aymer’s son, later shifted allegiance and fought for Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
