The surname Sinclair is derived from the Norman de Saint Clair family. The Sinclairs were a prominent Scottish clan of Norman origin, settling in Scotland with Sir William Saint Clair, who accompanied Princess Margaret Atheling, later the wife of Malcolm III. He was granted the Barony of Rosslin, south of Edinburgh, confirmed to his son in 1180. The Sinclair clan is renowned for its historic influence and enduring presence in Scotland, particularly around Rosslyn and the Borders.
