The Brodie surname has several suggested origins. One theory links the Brodies to the ancient Pictish tribes of Moray, taking their name from the Pictish royal family of Brude. The lands of Brodie lie about twenty miles from the Inverness stronghold of King Brude. Another interpretation is that the name derives from the Gaelic Brothaigh, meaning “a mire” or “ditch.” The Brodies became a distinguished Highland family whose ancestral seat, Brodie Castle, still stands today near Forres in Moray.
