The Blair surname is derived from the Gaelic blàr, meaning “plain” or “field,” and originally referred to families living near open fields or clearings. The Blairs were an ancient family from Perthshire, closely connected with the Abbey of Scone, the place where Scottish kings were traditionally crowned. The name is first recorded in the 12th century, when Stephen de Blair witnessed a charter in the reign of King William the Lion.
