The Wallace surname is thought to imply that the family were originally “Strathclyde Britons,” inhabitants of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde which existed until around the 10th century. Another theory suggests they were a Shropshire family who accompanied the Stewarts to Scotland. The name is first recorded in Scotland between 1165 and 1173, when Richard Walensis witnessed a Charter from Walter, son of Alan. As vassals of the High Stewards of Scotland, the Wallaces held lands near Kilmarnock, later receiving Elderslie and Auchinbothie in Renfrewshire.
