The Menzies surname originates from Mayneris, near Rouen in Normandy, from where the family came to Scotland during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Anglo-Norman branch of the family took the name Manners and later became the ancestors of the Dukes of Rutland. In Scotland, Sir Robert de Meyners rose to prominence, becoming Chamberlain of Scotland during the reign of Alexander II around 1248. He is widely regarded as the founder of the Menzies dynasty, which went on to establish itself as an influential Highland clan.
