The MacKay surname claims descent from the Royal House of Moray through Morgund of Pluscarden. The clan was firmly established in Strathnaver by the 14th century, with Iye appearing as Chamberlain to Walter, Bishop of Caithness, in 1263. Iye’s descendant, Angus Dubh, strengthened the clan’s royal ties by marrying a granddaughter of Robert II in 1415. For over four centuries, the MacKays were engaged in a bitter land struggle with the Sutherlands, a feud they ultimately lost in 1829.
