The MacGillivray surname is derived from the Gaelic Mac Gille Bràth, meaning “Son of the Servant of Judgement.” The MacGillivrays were an old Highland clan, closely linked with the Macleans of Mull and later forming part of the Chattan Confederation. The name is first recorded in the 15th century, when MacGillivrays are noted among the Gaelic families of the Western Isles and mainland Highlands.
