The MacEwen surname is derived from Ewen of Otter, a prominent figure in 13th century Argyll. The MacEwens were a Highland clan, historically associated with the Barony of Otter on Loch Fyne. Following the surrender of their lands to James I in 1432, they became dependants of Clan Campbell and were described as “broken Highland men,” answering to the Earls of Argyll. The name is first recorded in 1174 when Malcolm mac Ewen witnessed a Charter by Malcolm, 2nd Earl of Atholl.
