The MacArthur surname (Mac-ic-Artair, “son of Arthur”) is of ancient Celtic origin, with roots in Argyll lost in early antiquity. The MacArthurs were closely linked with Clan Campbell, and through their steadfast support of Robert the Bruce they gained extensive estates in mid-Argyll. These lands, once held by the MacDougalls who opposed Bruce, became the heart of MacArthur territory and established the family as a respected Highland clan.
