The Logan surname represents two distinct branches: a Highland branch, often adopting the name MacLennan, and a Lowland branch descending from Sir Robert Logan of Restalrig, who married a daughter of Robert II and became Admiral of Scotland in 1400. The name is first recorded in 1296, when Philippe de Logyn, Burgess of Montrose, and Thurbrand de Logyn of Dumfriesshire rendered homage to Edward I of England.
