The Kennedy surname is of Gaelic origin, descended from Duncan of Carrick who lived in the 12th century. The Kennedys were a powerful Lowland family with roots in Ulster and later established in Ayrshire, where they became one of the most influential clans in Carrick. The name is first recorded in the reign of William the Lion, when Gilbert Mac Kennedi witnessed a Charter from the lands of Carric.
