The Keith surname is of territorial origin, taken from the lands of Keith in East Lothian. Tradition claims that the Keiths descend from the Catti, a Germanic tribe, one of whose number emigrated to Scotland and gained favour with Malcolm II. The Keiths were powerful hereditary Marischals of Scotland, entrusted with the safety of the Monarch within Parliament and the custody of the Royal Regalia. The name is first recorded in 1010, when Robert, Chief of the Catti, slew the Danish General Camus at the Battle of Barrie and was rewarded with the hereditary office of Marischal of the Kingdom.
