The Irvine surname has territorial origins, deriving from both Irving in Dumfriesshire and Irvine in Ayrshire. Early bearers of the name include Robert de Hirewine, who witnessed a charter in 1226, and Robert de Iruwyn, who witnessed another from the Bishop of St Andrews in 1260. A proud family tradition also claims descent through Crinan the Thane, Abbot of Dunkeld, linking the Irvines with King Duncan of Scotland, who was slain by Macbeth.
