The Hunter surname is occupational in origin, reflecting the clan’s ancient role as royal huntsmen. The Hunters are said to have accompanied Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, from Normandy to England, and later arrived in Scotland in the 12th century at the invitation of King David I. In 1296, Aylmer le Hunter rendered homage to Edward I of England, and in 1374 the lands of Hunterston were granted to William Hunter by King Robert II, in return for the symbolic payment of a silver coin on the Feast of Pentecost.
