The Henderson surname is thought to derive from “son of Henry,” with distinct Highland and Lowland origins. Tradition claims that Big Henry, or Eannig Mor Mac Righ Neachtan, son of King Nectan of Caledonia in the 8th century, founded the Hendersons of Glencoe. Meanwhile, the Hendersons of Fordell in Fife are believed to descend from the Henrysons of Dumfries. The name is first recorded in 1374, when William Henderson is listed as Chamberlain of Lochmaben Castle, serving under Edward III of England.
