The Gordon surname originates from the Parish of Gordon in Berwickshire, emerging in Scotland in the late 12th century. Richer de Gordun, Lord of the Barony of Gordon in the Merse, between 1150 and 1160 granted land and the church of St Michael to the monks of Kelso. By 1300, Sir Adam de Gordon had risen to prominence as Warden of the Marches. A staunch supporter of Robert the Bruce, he was sent to Rome to petition the Pope to lift Bruce’s excommunication. For his loyal service, he was granted the lands of Strathbogie in Aberdeenshire, though his life ended at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333.
