The Fergusson surname has multiple historic origins across Scotland. The Fergussons of Kintyre and Kilkerran in Ayrshire take their name from St Ciaran, one of the twelve apostles of Ireland who arrived in Dalruadhain in the 6th century. The Argyllshire Fergussons trace their descent from Fergus Mór mac Erc, King of Scots around the year 500, while the Kilkerran branch descends from Fergus, Lord of Galloway, who lived in the reigns of David I and Malcolm IV. The Fergussons of Craigdarroch in Dumfriesshire have a recorded history from the 14th century, when they received a charter from David II.
