The Drummond surname originates from the lands of Drymen in Stirlingshire, derived from the Gaelic dromainn, meaning “high ground.” Tradition holds that the Drummonds descend from Yorik, a Hungarian prince who accompanied Princess Margaret Atheling to Scotland in 1068. The family appears early in Scottish records: Malcolm, Chamberlain of Lennox, witnessed charters of Maldwin, 3rd Earl of Lennox, between 1225 and 1270. Later, Gilbert de Drummond of Dumbarton and Malcolm de Drummond swore allegiance to Edward I of England in 1296.
