The Craig surname, also spelled Craigh, Creagh, and Creag, derives from the Gaelic for “a steep rock or cliff,” a name that was widely adopted across Scotland. A family of Craig associated with Clan Gordon was established at Craigfintray in Aberdeenshire, and several of the name rendered homage to Edward I of England in 1296. By the 15th century, at least three families styled themselves “Craig of that Ilk,” marking the clan’s strong territorial presence.
