The Colquhoun name is territorial in origin, taken from the barony of Colquhoun on the shores of Loch Lomond in Dunbartonshire. In the reign of Alexander II, Humphrey de Kilpatrick (or Kirkpatrick) was granted the lands of Auchentorily, Colquhoun, and Dumbuck by Malduin, Earl of Lennox. It was Humphrey who built Dunglas Castle, a stronghold overlooking the River Clyde, establishing Colquhoun power in the region.
