Clan Badge Kennedy

In ancient times, a Clan Chief wore a distinctive badge on his helmet so that his followers could recognise him in the turmoil of battle. This emblem, known as the Crest of the Chief, appears at the top of his Full Coat of Arms. Anyone bearing the same name as the Chief is considered a clansman and may wear the Crest encircled by the Strap and Buckle Garter. Many Scottish clans also include families descended through the female line, known as Septs, who likewise retain the right to wear or display the Clan crest.
