The Campbells of Glenorchy, later known as the Campbells of Breadalbane, descend from Black Colin of Glenorchy, the third son of Sir Duncan Campbell of Loch Awe, 1st Lord Campbell, and Lady Marjorie Stewart. Following the dispersal of the MacGregors from Glenorchy in the late 15th century, Sir Duncan granted these lands to Black Colin, who further strengthened the family’s power by marrying the co-heiress of John, Lord of Lorne, thereby inheriting one-third of the Lorne estates. Black Colin also built Kilchurn Castle at the north-east end of Loch Awe, strategically commanding the gateway to the Western Highlands. By then, it was said that the Chief of Glenorchy could travel from the east end of Loch Tay to the Argyll coast without leaving his own land.
