The Buchanan surname derives from the Gaelic “Buth Chanain,” meaning “House of the Canon.” The Buchanans originated in Stirlingshire, with their clan lands located on the eastern shores and lower end of Loch Lomond. Clan tradition holds that the territory was first acquired in the 11th century through the marriage of Anselan O’Kyan, son of the King of Ulster, who supported Malcolm II in repelling a Danish invasion. By c.1225, the lands were granted to Dominus Absalon, a holy man, by the Earls of Lennox, and later in the same century, Alexander II confirmed the clan’s ownership of the island of Clairinch, also known as “Slughorn” after the clan’s war cry.
