The Bruce surname is of territorial origin, deriving from the Chateau d'Adam at Brix in Normandy. The first Bruce recorded in Britain was Robert de Brus, who arrived with William the Conqueror's Norman invasion of England in 1066 and is thought to have died in 1094. His son, also named Robert, was the first of the family with a Scottish connection. As a companion of Prince David, he came north to Scotland and was granted the Lordship of Annandale after David became King of Scotland. The Bruces became one of the most celebrated families in Scottish history, ultimately producing King Robert the Bruce, one of Scotland’s greatest heroes.
