The MacGregor surname is derived from the Gaelic Mac Griogair, meaning “son of Gregor,” with tradition holding that they descend from Grigor, the third son of Kenneth MacAlpin, King of Scots in the 9th century. The MacGregors were one of the oldest Highland clans, senior members of Clan Alpin, and once held extensive lands in Glenstrae, Glenlochy, Glen Lyon and Glen Orchy. The name is first recorded in the 13th century, when they are documented as powerful landholders in the reign of Alexander II.
