The MacAulay surname has several provenances: one line descends from Clan Alpine, ancestral to the MacGregors; another originates from a branch of the Earldom of Lennox. Duncan filius Auleth witnessed a charter by Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, around 1285, marking one of the earliest records of the name. For the following three centuries, the MacAulays were prominent as principal vassals of the Lennox earldom, establishing themselves as an influential Scottish clan.
