The Livingstone surname is believed to derive from Leving, a Saxon who acquired lands in West Lothian in the 12th century under King David I. Members of the name Leving are recorded in documents from this period, establishing the family’s long presence in Scotland. The earliest notable record is that of Sir Archibald de Levingestoune, who rendered homage to Edward I of England in 1296.
