The Douglas surname is one of the most powerful in Scottish history, second only to the Royal House of Stewart. The first of the name recorded was William de Douglas, who lived in the 12th century and witnessed Charters by the Bishop of Glasgow and King William the Lion around 1200. By 1263, Sir William’s sons were fighting at the Battle of Largs for Alexander III against the Norse, establishing Douglas as a formidable and loyal family of warriors.
