The Cunningham surname is territorial, originating in Ayrshire. The family descends from Warnebald, a vassal of Hugh de Moreville, who settled in Scotland in the 12th century. Around 1170, Robert filius de Warnebald granted land to the church of Kilmaurs, establishing the family’s ties to the region. A century later, Hervey de Cunningham, son of the laird of Kilmaurs, fought alongside Alexander III at the Battle of Largs, securing the clan’s place in Scottish history.
