The MacKenzie surname is associated with the Gaelic “MacCoinnich,” meaning “son of Coinneach.” The MacKenzies held lands in mid-Ross, stretching from Kintail on the West Coast to the Black Isle in the East. In 1263, following the Battle of Largs, which ended the Norse threat to Scotland, the MacKenzies were appointed part of the Royal Bodyguard — an honour they held until the Battle of Flodden in 1513. For loyal service to Alexander II and Alexander III, Colin MacKenzie was granted the lands of Kintail, cementing the clan’s prominence in the Highlands.
