The MacDonald surname is derived from the Gaelic Mac Dhomhnuill, meaning “son of Donald.” The MacDonalds of the Isles were one of the most powerful Highland clans, descended from Somerled, the 12th-century Norse-Gaelic warrior often styled as the “King of the Isles.” The clan held the title Lords of the Isles for centuries, ruling vast territories of the Hebrides and western Scotland by both sea and land.
