The MacDonald of Clanranald surname is derived from Ranald, eldest son of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, and Amy Macruari, heiress to a vast inheritance of Hebridean lands. The Clanranald branch became one of the most prominent and enduring lines of Clan Donald, though Ranald himself did not inherit the Lordship of the Isles, which passed to his half-brother through the royal Stewart line. The Clanranald were fierce warriors and staunch defenders of their lands in the Western Isles and Highlands, playing a notable role in Scotland’s turbulent medieval and early modern history. The name is first recorded in the 14th century, when Ranald established his line as a powerful cadet branch of the MacDonalds.
