The Kerr surname is of Norman origin, brought to Scotland in the 12th century by two brothers, Ralph and John. The Kerrs became a powerful Border clan, with the Roxburgh branch spelling the name Ker and the Lothian branch using Kerr. The Kerrs of Ferniehirst claim descent from Ralph, while the Ker of Cessford descend from John. The name is first recorded around 1190, when Johannes Ker appears in Scottish charters.
