The Hay surname is associated with a legendary origin at the Battle of Luncarty around 973, when a supporter of Kenneth III and his two sons saved the King from defeat against the Danes. In gratitude, the King granted lands where a falcon, released from Kinoull Hill, came to rest – some of the finest farmland in the Carse of Gowrie. The Hay family later rose to prominence in Perthshire and became one of Scotland’s most established noble families, with the Earls of Erroll serving as hereditary Lord High Constables of Scotland.
