The Gunn surname is of Viking descent, tracing back to Gunni, grandson of Sweyn Asleifsson, who married Ragnhild, a descendant of St Ragnavald. The Gunns were a powerful Highland clan occupying northern Caithness and Sutherland and were historically sworn enemies of Clan Keith. The clan participated in numerous conflicts throughout the 15th century and were eventually listed among the 'broken clans' of the North by 1594.
