The Grant surname is derived from Sir Laurence de Grant, who first emerged in Scotland in the mid-13th century. The Grants were a prominent Highland clan, loyal supporters of Robert the Bruce, and were granted lands in Glenmoriston and Glen Urquhart for their services. With rich holdings in the Spey Valley, they became firmly established as a powerful Highland family. Sir James Grant built Castle Freuchie in 1563, later renamed Castle Grant.
