The Fraser surname originates from Anjou in Normandy, with the family accompanying William the Conqueror to England in 1066. By 1160, Sir Simon Frazer held lands of Keith in East Lothian and gifted the church at Keith to the Abbey of Kelso. A later Simon Fraser stood alongside William Wallace in Scotland’s struggle for freedom and famously defeated three divisions of the English army at the Battle of Roslin in 1302. Captured by Edward I, he was executed with great cruelty, cementing his place in Scottish history. His cousin, Sir Alexander Fraser of Cowie, later married King Robert the Bruce’s sister, Mary, further entwining the Fraser line with Scotland’s royal heritage.
