The Stewart of Appin surname originates from the descendants of Sir James Stewart of Perstoun, grandson of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland. The clan rose to prominence in the Highlands, with John Stewart of Innermeath marrying the heiress to the Lordship of Lorne around 1836. The Stewarts of Appin became known for their strong Highland heritage and enduring loyalty to the Stewart line.
