The exact origin of the thistle as a Scottish badge is uncertain, but legend tells that an invading Norse soldier stepped barefoot on a thistle during a night attack, alerting the Scots and saving the nation from defeat. The motto associated with the thistle, Nemo me impune lacessit, has long been used by Scottish regiments and the Order of the Thistle.
