The surname Ramsay is of Anglo-Norman origin. Symon de Ramesie was granted lands in Midlothian by David I of Scotland. King David, also Earl of Huntingdon, carried the Ramsey name from England, and Symon likely accompanied him when he became King of Scots in 1124. The Ramsays were prominent landholders and influential in Scottish society, with the name first recorded in the early 12th century when Symon de Ramesie received his lands in Midlothian.
