The surname Murray is derived from Freskin de Moravia, a Flemish nobleman in the 12th century. Freskin accompanied David I on his return from England to Scotland in 1124 and was granted lands in West Lothian and Moray. He and his sons married into the ancient Royal House of Moray, consolidating their position in the region. The clan became prominent landholders and influential figures in Moray and West Lothian. The name is first recorded in early 12th-century charters as de Moravia.
