The surname Munro originates from the River Roe in Derry, Ireland. The Munros came to Scotland and became vassals of the Earldom of Ross. Robert de Munro received a charter from Robert I for “Counetis in Strathspey and Cupermakcultis.” By the 14th century, the clan’s lands extended from the north side of the Cromarty Firth to include Loch Broom, establishing them as influential Highland lords. The clan is first recorded in the 13th–14th centuries with Robert de Munro, noted for securing their lands and status under the Scottish crown.
