The surname Moffat is believed to originate from the lands of Moffat in Dumfriesshire, taking its name from the Old Norse influence brought by Andlaw (Allan), who came from Norway in the 10th century. His descendants established ties in Annandale, and through marriage into the family of William de Monte, the Moffats became a prominent Border clan. The Moffats were ancient vassals of the Annans, the old lords of Annandale, and held significant power across Dumfriesshire prior to 1124, when Robert de Brus acquired the Lordship of Annandale.
