The surname MacLeod derives from Leod, younger son of Olaf the Black, Norse King of Man and the Isles, who lived in the early 13th century. Through marriage to the heiress of MacRaild of Skye, Leod gained Dunvegan Castle around 1220, which became the historic seat of the clan. Following the defeat of King Haakon of Norway at the Battle of Largs in 1263, Leod inherited the islands of Lewis and Harris, establishing the MacLeods as one of the most powerful families in the Hebrides.
