The MacLean surname derives from the Gaelic MacGilleEathain, meaning “son of the servant of John.” The MacLeans trace their ancestry to Gilleain-na-Tuaighe, “Gillian of the Battle Axe,” a descendant of the Kings of Dalriada. He fought at the Battle of Largs in 1263 against King Haakon of Norway, while his son rendered homage to Edward I of England in 1296. The clan later supported Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314, and the first recorded reference to the MacLeans of Duart appears in a Papal Dispensation of 1367, permitting Lachlan Lubanach MacLean to marry Mary MacDonald, daughter of the Lord of the Isles.
