The Carmichael surname originates from the Barony of Carmichael in Lanarkshire, territory granted to the Douglas family by Robert the Bruce in 1321. Earlier mentions date back to c.1221, when Robert de Carmitely held lordship rights in Cleghorn, and William de Creimechel witnessed a charter in 1225. Between 1374 and 1384, Sir John de Carmychell received a charter for the lands of Carmychell from William, Earl of Douglas, and in 1414 the Barony of Carmichael was formally confirmed on the head of the family.
