The Barclay surname derives from Berkeley in Gloucestershire, England, of Norman origin. The Barclays were a distinguished family who settled in Scotland in the 12th century. The name is first recorded around 1162, when Richard de Berkeley witnessed the foundation charter of Kilwinning Abbey. Over the centuries, the clan became prominent in Aberdeenshire, with Sir David Barclay fighting alongside Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence, and later establishing their seat at Towie Barclay Castle, built in 1593.
