Woven from a thick recycled wool blend, it has the dark green, navy and black sett that made the Government tartan famous. Black Watch tartan takes its name from Am Freiceadan Dubh, the independent Highland companies raised in the 1720s and later formed into the 42nd Regiment. The dark sett was chosen so the Watch stood apart from the red-coated regulars. Today it is simply one of the most usable tartans for interiors: deep, masculine and easy to pair with oak, leather, charcoal, cream and brass.
