Glasgow Green came alive with the sound of pipes and drums during the 2026 World Pipe Band Championships. Held on the banks of the River Clyde, this famous event brought together bands, supporters and visitors from around the world. For two days, everyone could enjoy music, competition and the unique atmosphere of Scottish culture.

A Special Return for Celtic Cross
For Celtic Cross, this year’s championships were particularly meaningful. Competing in Grade 4B marked the band’s return to the Worlds after more than two decades away.
Pipe Sergeant Kevin Nickerson and Drum Sergeant Wendy Garnant, who are still active members of the band, also took part in Celtic Cross’s previous trip to the event in 2005. Their presence created a wonderful connection between the band’s history and a new generation of musicians.

Music Across Large and Small Arenas
The scale of the event was impressive. Performances took place across several smaller competition arenas, allowing visitors to move freely between the different grades and hear the bands at close range.
Each arena had its own atmosphere, from the tense silence before a performance to the powerful sound of the pipes and the remarkable precision of the drum corps.
The most important moments could also be followed on a large screen. This was particularly convenient during the Grade 1 competition, when the main arena filled with spectators.

Festival Food and Treats
There was plenty to enjoy away from the competition circles. Food stalls served a selection of popular festival favourites, including burgers, enormous hot dogs, sweet treats and refreshing ice cream topped with bright raspberry sauce.
A warm meal and a cold drink were especially welcome during a full day spent outdoors.
Entertainment for Children
The organisers also made sure that younger visitors had plenty to do. Children could enjoy games, activities and mini-golf, providing a fun break from the musical performances.
The colourful sculptures around Glasgow Green also offered cheerful settings for family photographs.

Simon Fraser University Crowned World Champions
The musical highlight was the victory of Simon Fraser University Pipe Band from Vancouver, led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan. It was the band’s first World Championship title since 2009 and its first under Bevan’s leadership.
SFU won three of the four events, including the overall Medley. Inveraray & District won the overall MSR, while St Laurence O’Toole claimed the overall drumming title. Field Marshal Montgomery finished second in Grade 1 and secured both Champion of Champions awards—for the band and the drum corps.
A Weekend That Will Be Remembered
For Celtic Cross, however, the weekend was about much more than results. Returning after so many years, performing on one of the world’s most important piping stages and sharing the experience with friends and families made the 2026 championships a milestone that the band will remember for many years to come.
